Heroides (Epistolae Heroidum)
1533 · Toscolano Maderno
Ovid (Ovidius Naso)
$3,500
Printed in the boonies on the shore of Lake Garda by the eccentric typographer Alessandro Paganini. Paganini and his father were among the scholar-printers active in the tidal wave of publishing in Renaissance Venice (alongside Aldus, Jenson, the Giunti, and all the rest). Around 1520, Paganini relocated the operation to a paper mill town on Lake Garda. While the Venetians published classics in Aldus’s stylish italic type, Paganini designed his own distinctive and quite legible hybrid, unique in Renaissance printing. All Paganini Press editions are uncommon and desirable.
